The Greatness Of King David Was The Presence

David, Shepherd. Let us consider David as the shepherd. He was found in the pastures with his fathers flock. God searched and found the one whose heart was like His own. David the shepherd. Now anointed as king. David remained a shepherd for the rest of his life. He was a shepherd to Jesse’s flock, but when he became king of Israel, he became the shepherd of His heavenly Father’s flock.

David’s viewpoint is clear. His anointing was for the flock of God and not his own. Can a man make a perfect lamb? Can he raise the offspring of a ewe to a better specimen than what it was from its conception? Can he give it better stature or cause it’s wool to be more luxurious? I think not. A shepherd cannot make a better flock. That is the business of the Creator. The shepherd can only protect and lead the flock so that it might become everything that the Creator has made it to be.

David did not see his greatness as coming from himself or for himself. He was made great by his Creator and that greatness was for the flock of God’s heart. What David did, he did for Israel. What David had, he had for the “apple of God’s eye.” David was a shepherd king. That is what made him great. Few today can handle greatness. Either they take the responsibility for their greatness upon themselves or they use the greatness that is given them for their own ego and gain.

God continued to give growing greatness to king David even by not allowing him to build the temple for him, but by causing him to prepare for his son to do it. More greatness came upon him as he worked and fought relentlessly, knowing he would simply turn it all over to his son Solomon. Jesus spoke of “Solomon and all his glory” while teaching the principles of heavenly prosperity. Yet Jesus, the Good Shepherd, called himself the “Son of David.”

God’s heart was toward His Son. David’s heart was toward his son.

David longed to be in God’s presence. When he was able to do so he really came to life. David could shepherd very well. He also could wield a sling and a rod. Not only that but the guy could sing and dance and write songs. When it came to playing the harp; he was the best in all the land. David could prophesy; boy could he ever prophesy. He was a warrior of heroic extremes. He was wise and witty. He was handsome and he was charming. He was approachable and was an excellent father. David was kind and gentle and had a soft heart.

Of all that David was, he most importantly was anointed. All that he did, he did well because of the anointing. And, David knew it. The anointing came upon him when Samuel’s horn of oil was poured over him. But David knew that would not be enough for him to see the anointing activated in his life. That which activates the anointing is the presence of God. David loved the Presence!

Israel had greatness among all the nations. Israel the fierce, the robust, the prosperous! Always getting out of every fix and bondage. Even when it is impossible. Israel was born out of the promise of the nation’s father: Abraham. The promise of Abraham was born out of the Presence of God upon and with Abraham. From the Presence came the words, “I will make you the father of many nations!” To this date, Israel will be great as she seeks the Presence of the Lord, only.

David was anointed but that anointing that came upon him was only activated by his place in the presence of the Lord.
