The Supernatural Provision of God…

These are the notes for the message that Wayne C Anderson discussed at The Shepherd’s House, in Albany, New York, on June 27, 2010. Watch the video online at heismyshepherd.com

Text:  Mark 8: 13-21
“And He left them, and getting into the boat again, departed to the other side. Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. 15Then He charged them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.” But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.” “Also, when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?” And they said, “Seven.” So He said to them, “How is it you do not understand?”

Jesus fed Israel with Himself (the Bread of Life) first. Like the firstborn of many brethren He then fed the gentiles as a sign of the world. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son”
Text: Matthew 16: 6 – 12

“Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have taken no bread.” But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread? Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up? Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up? How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?—but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

When the disciples were worried about not bringing bread for the journey Jesus questioned them.
How many basket were left over when I fed the five thousand? The answer was twelve. (those who were served at this event were mostly Jewish)
He then asked how many baskets were left over when He served the four thousand with just seven loaves, and the answer was seven baskets. (those who were served at this event were mostly gentiles)

Let’s look at the dynamics of these happenings and the Biblical meanings of these numbers.
Five thousand are served with five loaves and there were twelve baskets left over.

In the Biblical metaphor:
Five=Torah, the five books of Moses
Twelve=12 tribes, Israel

There were also four thousand served with seven left over.

In Biblical metaphor:
Four=Four winds/Four directions/Four corners of the world
Seven= Sabbath (six days bread is given but on the sixth day bread is provided in abundance for Sabbath

He reproved them for having such little faith and little hearts.

There was a great message of provision found here. Why worry if your trust is in Him?
He first feeds the children of Israel – the firstborn of God. Then He feeds the world.

This is a great sign of provision by inheritance and not privilege. In His care, He is the Bread that comes down out of heaven. He is the “manna” of the wilderness. Manna means, “What is it?” and perhaps even “Who is it?” The answer is Jesus. Messiah. Lord.
This discourse warns the disciples of the leaven (evil doctrines) of the religious and then ends with the revelation that He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. (Matthew 16: 13 – 20) All of this began with a statement that Jesus was making about the doctrines of the Pharisees. What He was really warning the ones He loved about was the pride of the Pharisee that puffs up. Leaven was the metaphor that Jesus used to describe the explosive and destructive life that religious pride has all on its own.
