A year or so after I had begun my work in the fire department I was going to school in emergency medicine at the same time I was operating the family business and working as a volunteer firefighter in King County, south of Seattle.
One of the most astounding things happened while I was on duty with my friend and partner, Mark Tessen. We were up late on this particular night, watching a movie or something when the alarm sounded for an aid run. We jumped into the aid car and rolled out the door and on our way to the location that the dispatcher had given us. While in route the dispatcher told us that he had no idea what the problem was but that the caller had simply said, “Send help right away, someone is dying!” The caller gave the address to a home and then hung up.
As we sped to the home and approached the front door we both had a very “eerie feeling” go through us. It appeared as though everything was silent – more so than it should have been. No one greeted us. No one was stirring. Even after rapping hard on the front door of the house, no one was stirred enough to come to open the door to us. We were a bit puzzled and so Mark suggested that we look around a bit while I contacted the dispatcher to request the police. We still had that “eerie feeling” and it was not going away.
As Mark peered through the living room window he yelled to me, “Hey! Come and look at this!” As we stared into the living room of the home we saw what appeared to be people lying on the floor in various places inside. This view, coupled with that feeling that we were both gripped with, caused us to break the door open with force!
We were immediately met with a strong stale smell and a lack of oxygen in the air! We began to open windows and doors while we went to each of the persons lying on the floor in what was now beginning to be a semi-conscious state. Each of the effected persons were young girls that were 10 – 12 years of age. We heard moaning in one of the bedrooms and found an adult couple in bed in the same unconscious state as the children in the living room.
By the time the police arrived we had administered oxygen to all of them and they had completely revived. The story that emerged was a dangerous one. The girls were having a “sleep-over party” that night and the parents had fixed a barbeque in the fireplace with a small pile of briquettes where they had apparently roasted hot dogs or something over the coals. The party went late with the girls having fun while the parents went to bed at their usual time of the evening. Someone had closed the damper on the fireplace and the house was well sealed for the winter weather so the burning coals simply ate up all of the oxygen in the entire house. They nearly all died of asphyxiation and lack of oxygen.
Now describing this incident is not the real reason for me giving an account of this story. There came the question of who called the dispatcher. When we played the tape of the call, we could not tell who it was or if it was a male or a female voice. No one new what was taking place in the home and no one in the home was capable of placing that call!
There were a lot of destinies in that house that night and the kingdom of God was at work. Through the years I have seen angels appear in places as well as heroic acts by angels of our God. This is one of those cases where at least one angel passed through the veil that divides heaven and earth and made that call for help. The result was quite a few destinies were saved that night. We do have angels watching over us. I believe that more each day. I thank God for the work that angels do in our lives.
